The Al-Menshawy family is forever changed by tragedy. IN THE LANGUAGE OF MIRACLES tells the story of an Egyptian family desperately trying to move on in their community a year after their eldest child murders his girlfriend and ends his own life. Dr. Samir Al-Menshawy has worked hard to provide his Muslim family with a comfortable life in an American suburb. Shunned and midunderstood by neighbors and schoolmates, Khaled tries to distance himself from his family but his grandmother's love keeps drawing him back. Nagla, the mother, sinks into a depression and questions her Muslim faith and traditions. An emotional journey for all.
Rajia Hassib shares a well written, intimate look inside an Egyptian-Muslim home. I've come away with a better understanding of a family that I enjoyed spending time with, even under the circumstances of the book's dark subject matter.
